Top 10 Games of Gamescom 2014

This year’s gamescom brought with it many surprise announcements. No one game dominated the show. It wasn’t just sequels and annual repackaged shooters. Here’s our favorite games from gamescom 2014.

From the creators of Dark Souls, comes the new PS4 exclusive, Bloodborne. A Gothic action-RPG, it centers around a weird bladed, scythe swinging, shotgun wielding protagonist. Needless to say, the hype is strong with this one. “And so the nightly hunt begins.” – the Maiden in Black.

Until Dawn

A slasher-film inspired offering from Supermassive Games, Until Dawn was debuted this past week during Sony’s press conference at gamescom. The game focuses on using the butterfly effect to make the player’s every choice meaningful (this is no “Would you kindly” scenario). No release date is available yet but this game is certainly shaping up to be a bloody good time.

Assassin’s Creed Unity

While the French Revolution rages on, game developers fight for player freedom. A fan favorite from Ubisoft, the Assassin’s Creed series is now looking to put more power in the hands of the player rather than the traditional linear platformer. You will still have objectives to complete but the road to accomplishing them is a bit more open ended. This includes the removal of Mission Fails which we are very thankful for.

Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions

Along with King’s Quest comes another cult classic from recently revived Sierra Entertainment. Sierra Entertainment will be focusing on providing ports of indie games to all major platforms. The first of which is Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions. A beautiful blend of bullet hell and multiplayer, Geometry Wars definitely won’t disappoint.

Sunset Overdrive

PC master race version confirmed at gamescom 2014 this past week. A PS4 version is unlikely though. Sunset Overdrive is a Tony Hawk meets Saints Row mashup by developer Insomniac Games.

Fable Legends

Fable finally gets multiplayer. The one thing that was holding it back from true greatness. Beta starts October 16th. As a fan of the original and Fable: The Lost Chapters I have got to say I can’t wait. Here’s just a little something to whet your appetite.

From Allods Team and Obsidian Entertainment (creators of Dungeon Siege III and now the developers of the Pathfinder electronic games), comes Skyforge, a new high-fantasy IP. Though it hasn’t been discussed as heavily as other AAA titles, the sprawling landscapes and intricately detailed characters could lead this to be one of the best games and certainly best MMO’s of 2015. No release date has been set yet but we can hope.

Heroes of the Storm

Blizzard’s entrance into the MOBA world after the success of Defense of the Ancients (DOTA). Featuring characters from all the Blizzard franchises, Heroes of the Storm will now feature Azmodan (Diablo) as well as Chen Stormstout and Anub’arak (World of Warcraft). The character possibilities are endless as each IP games new characters. Will it be enough though to challenge League of Legends for the crown?

Unless you have been living under a rock, in a cave, on a hill, overlooking a barren desert with no sign of life, or more importantly internet access for hundreds of miles you know that Destiny, developed by Bungie of Halo acclaim, will be released soon. We got one last look at it and the new Mars and Venus trailers before it disappears until launch day.

The Witcher 3

We finally get a look at gameplay footage from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. It was so successful at gamescom that CD Projekt RED saw fit to grace us with an additional 35 minute gameplay video. Both are available below.
