Take-Two Closes 2K China, Cancels Borderlands Online

4x Maya characters from Borderlands

Having been scheduled to start beta sometime this year, the free-to-play Borderlands Online by 2K China has just been cancelled and the studio in charge dissolved.

In a statement by 2K it was suggested that the reason for its closing was the inability to deliver the game on time and at a favorable cost.

We determined that the additional time required to finish current projects at the studio, particularly Borderlands Online, would not yield a favorable return on investment.

While it is disappointing that we will not likely see this released as an MMO in the future (and certainly not in the West, given the general reception to F2P here), at the end of the day, 2K is a business and they have to look out for their financial interests. With this ~150 people we laid off, though 2K has said that they attempted to find other opportunities for as many employees as possible within the company.
